The El Cielo Biosphere Reserve has been host to a variety of research activities, and currently two
conservation programs aimed at sustainable development are also underway. This page contains links to
write-ups and photos about various research and conservation activities. Salamanders, birds, orchids, and
palms are just a few subjects which have been studied in El Cielo.

The reserve inhabitants are currently focused on finding economic outlets which will allow them to generate
income without creating habitat disturbance or degradation. The Mexican NGO
ProNatura has been the
forerunner on this front.

For our part, with support from the Association of Zoo Horticulture and The Oklahoma City Zoo and
Botanical Gardens, we initiated a new program largely focused on sustainable agroforestry  in 2003.
El Cielo Community Conservation Program
El Cielo is home to over 250 species of birds. It remains one of the biospheres biggest
research topics. This is just one of many projects carried out in the Reserve:
